Senior Thesis - Colony Collapse Disorder: Be Swarm Intelligent

For my BFA Senior Thesis at Redline Contemporary Art Center, I made and installed an educational iPad application about colony collapse disorder, the disease affecting North American honeybees in massive numbers. The application explained what the disorder was, provided information about how to help, and included an interactive Processing sketch.

Included in my thesis was an abstract geometric beehive made of folded paper. The paper hive stood on a bamboo platform and housed an Arduino, and addressable LED strip. The LED lights softly glowed on and off within the carefully selected range of a ‘cool’ color palette. They represented the bees within the hive.

Also included in the sculpture is a PIR motion sensor that, when triggered, causes the ‘bees’ to swarm around and react to human presence.
